Socialist Fightback Students is a newly launched national student organization which unites revolutionary student groups from seventeen different university and college campuses across Canada. We have active clubs from Victoria, Kelowna and Edmonton in the West, to Waterloo, Hamilton, Ottawa and Toronto in Ontario, to universities and CEGEPs across the Island of Montreal.

We have big plans for the new school year. Our first task is to reach out to as many students as possible during the first month of the school semester. Many young people are questioning the status quo, have developed a critical outlook, are exploring revolutionary ideas and want to get active in collective movements (or already are!). We are organizing literature stalls during the various club days or frosh weeks and throughout the month of September. We are also organizing a schedule of public discussion groups. We need your help to get the word out and to help organize these activities!

The Socialist Fightback Students groups aren’t just discussion clubs. We believe theory is vitally important; after all, how can you change the world if you don’t understand it? However, theory and ideas are only useful when we apply them—when we act upon the world to change it. Theory and action are inseparable for revolutionary Marxists.

We are therefore an activist organization. We take revolutionary ideas to the workers and youth, on and off campus. Marxists stand on the forefront of the various struggles that are erupting today.

Our student clubs have a proud tradition of supporting workers’ struggles, such as strike actions and tenant rent strikes. In the last year we participated in supporting the strike of campus food workers in Toronto, baggage handlers at Pearson Airport, construction workers in Quebec and the rent strike in the Parkdale neighbourhood, to name just a few.

Naturally, we have also been at the forefront of youth movements, such as the Occupy movement, the Quebec student movement, anti-police brutality protests and the recent wave of anti-Trump protests. We need your help to strengthen current and future movements with socialist ideas.

One of the most important struggles right now is the movement across North America in solidarity with the left-wing youth and workers who took a stand against racism and fascism in Charlottesville, Virginia. A number of activists were injured during those protests and one was even killed.

After the events in Charlottesville, and with Donald Trump blaming “violence on many sides” after the fascist terrorist attack, fascist and racist groups have been emboldened. They have organized protests, often very small, across North America to spew their poison. The response of the left has been to organize mass actions that overwhelm the racists and shut them down. Socialist Fightback Students is at the forefront of mobilizing for these efforts.

The best memorial we can provide for Heather Heyer, the socialist martyr who was struck by the motor vehicle of a cowardly racist, and to all those injured in Charlottesville, is to continue the struggle. In the words of Joe Hill, the American union organizer and songwriter who was executed: “Don’t Mourn, Organize!”
