It was and remains vital that the labour movement in Canada revives the tradition of standing in solidarity with the workers and the poor who are oppressed by our ruling class, internationally.

Working class living standards are declining in Canada. Total life expectancy is falling, unemployment and homelessness are rising. And, the federal government’s new budget offers workers little in the way of relief.

But the budget does earmark $33.8 billion for war.

For six months last year, all eyes were on Hollywood—not for the movies they were making, but for what they weren’t making. Hollywood was locked in a labour struggle that brought the $134 billion film and television industry to a dead stop. The WGA strike ended on Sept. 27, the SAG-AFTRA strike on Dec. 5. Now that the dust has settled, we can see what was won, what was lost, and most importantly, how. 

According to federal data, strikes across Canada hit an 18-year high in 2023,accounting for over two million days not worked. This was the third successive year-over-year increase since the pandemic. It is a sign that, in the face of the current crisis, workers are radicalizing.

Canadian mining and apparel lobbyists are asking the federal government to halt new legislation targeting slavery and child labour in supply chains. This corporate stalling not only serves as an admission of complicity, but also reveals the lucrative nature of forced labour under capitalism.

Meta, the social media giant that owns Facebook and Instagram, began blocking all news from its platforms in Canada in August. For communists, the banning of news on platforms owned by billionaires underscores the need for an independent workers’ press through the production and distribution of a physical newspaper.
