…and the struggle of Montreal subway (STM) maintenance workers is no exception to this rule.
The chorus of prejudiced columnists are, of course, quick to repeat the same anti-worker nonsense like parrots. For example, Maxime Bergeron of La Presse writes that STM workers are privileged and suggests that they moderate their demands because… the unemployment rate among young Quebecers is very high!
“I would like to make a connection with the sharp rise in youth unemployment and their increasingly obstructed job prospects. Also: their unattainable dream of ironclad job security and a decent pension plan, such as those offered by the STM.
Many union members of this organization, already paid above average and enjoying substantial benefits, should take a moment to appreciate their privileged position compared to other categories of workers.”
Are STM employees stealing jobs from young people in Quebec? Are they the ones who decide on low wages in warehouses, grocery stores, and convenience stores? It’s the same old refrain that we shouldn’t complain because others have it worse. With that logic, children would still be dying in factories in French Canada.
