Danielle Smith of Alberta’s UCP has recently cut a huge amount of funding to the non-profit sector. My housemate is a social worker who for the last 1.5 years has spent their work day helping people get out of domestic violence situations and get them set up in new housing with furniture, food, and other basics. They have helped 37 people escape abusive situations this year so far. They were the only person doing this position in Edmonton. Because of the UCP cuts their workplace had to let them go with almost no notice. While we are worried about our own financials as there are now less positions for social workers province wide, it is crushing to think of the people that will not be able to escape their situations without this necessary support. I used to volunteer for a domestic violence hotline and while I never took stats, I would say at minimum 85 per cent of the people could not leave their situation due to money. The elites are crushing the workers in so many ways including keeping us in violent situations so they can line their own pockets! After abolishing capitalism there will be housing and basics for everyone and no one will be forced to stay in an abusive situation because they can’t afford to leave.
Austerity continues to hurt the most vulnerable
