I study Slavic languages in Switzerland and currently I’m doing a term abroad in Croatia to further my skills in the language. In the language course I met a young woman from Vancouver who had emigrated here. For a presentation of her choice she talked about Indigenous art and heritage. She was shocked that people in Europe don’t generally know about the genocide against Indigenous peoples in Canada. Since I follow the Canadian RCP’s material on the subject I could talk to her about it after class. I asked her, “do you believe reconciliation is possible under capitalism?” to which she replied, “honestly? No”. She was disgusted by the hypocrisy of the Canadian establishment. I sent her episode 10 of The Class Line, “BC NDP betrays Indigenous people” which I had come out just recently. Yesterday she hit me up, saying “I’ve listened to the podcast you sent me and to five more episodes, it’s really good! I find it really well presented and the discussions are so accessible since I have no experience in politics or communism. I sent my brother the episode on the crisis in B.C.. He studies political science and The Class Line presents a unique perspective.” As her mother was British she sent her the episode with Ben Curry and also praised the episode on Epstein. It helped her to see what we mean by saying “working class”. When I mentioned that what allows us to have this depth and clarity is the ideas and an active membership of hundreds, not just a podcast, she replied, “wow, that’s great!” This showed me again how being in the RCI helps us to connect the party and a working class perspective with people, wherever in the world you are.
