Wade Chang left his office, perhaps on his way to lunch, and was confronted with a crowd of around 50 burly labour militants chanting in his face. This was just one of the many rallies across the country on October 15th called by the CLC to protest bill C-39 – a direct attack on the right to strike.
Mr. Chang weaseled through the crowd while expressing that he “believed in their fight.” What exactly about the fight – whether defending the right to strike, organizing against Bill C-39, getting rid of back to work legislation, or perhaps simply the right to ‘free speech ’– he did not say. Politicians always deescalate with a smile, vague statements, and an air of sincerity, but the policies and bills that the Liberals are proposing do not mince words.
Posters on display at Wade Chang’s office present the Liberals as the ‘law and order’ party who are tough on crime and will keep communities safe, “strengthen border immigration controls (and) security” and introduce tougher bail reform for criminals. But one poster stood out. That evening, Chang would be speaking at an event entitled “Finding Inner Peace in Uncertain Times.” The rotting capitalist system he defends creates these volatile times. Mr. Chang can try to look inward all he wants but inner peace will not eradicate the developing class struggle that will keep returning to his doorstep.
