The Revolutionary Communist Party, section of the Revolutionary Communist International in Canada, strongly condemns the U.S. coup in Venezuela, as well as the complicity of the Canadian government.

This attack threatens to plunge Venezuela into chaos and provoke a wider war in the region. This has nothing to do with the false accusations of drug trafficking. This is proven by the fact that the Trump administration pardoned drug lord Juan Orlando Hernández last month. It is also completely hypocritical for the Americans to talk about “defending democracy” while bombing a country, kidnapping its head of state and taking control of the country.

This is imperialist aggression pure and simple. The aim is to install a puppet regime that will allow the United States imperialists to take control of Venezuela’s natural resources. Trump also wants to send a message to other governments in the region by punishing Venezuela for daring to challenge Yankee imperialism for more than twenty years.

But the United States does not act alone and in this regard, the Canadian government is not innocent. Following this attack, Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued a short statement that conveniently avoids mentioning the bombing of Venezuela or the kidnapping of Maduro! Instead, this statement took this precise moment to criticize the Venezuelan government which is under attack! This scandalous support for Trump’s imperialist aggression shows that Carney is not Trump’s opponent, but his accomplice.

And then Anand has the audacity to call for respect for international law in the same breath! What hypocrisy! This statement follows months of acts of piracy and imperialist intimidation by the U.S. government, amid the total and complicit silence of the Canadian government. For decades, the Canadian military has been collaborating with the U.S. military in the Caribbean. And the reason for this is not hard to see. Canadian banking and mining companies benefit from U.S. friendly regimes who open up their countries to domination by western imperialism. As well, the Canadian ruling class does not want to do anything that will jeopardize the renegotiations of the CUMSCA trade deal of which they are desperately hoping to hold onto.

This is why the Canadian ruling class and the Canadian government  have  helped pave the way for this morning’s attack.

Our leaders have blood on their hands.

And the hypocrisy couldn’t be more glaring. When Canadian imperialism’s geopolitical enemies, such as Russia and China, attack sovereign nations, Canadian politicians make a hue and cry in the name of defending international law and “sovereignty”. But this time, there will be no sanctions against the United States. Because it is the United States, the leader of Western capitalism, that is attacking. And under capitalism, profits take precedence over the rights of peoples and human lives.

Today, we must fight against this barbaric action and continue the struggle for a better world, without imperialism, without capitalism.

We invite all our supporters to join the various actions and demonstrations in solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

Down with American imperialism!

Stop Canadian complicity!

Hands off Venezuela!
