A new world is being born. Widening fissures in world relations are pulling at the seams of the “international rules-based order”. Amidst this chaos, only the ideas of Marxism can provide clarity and guide revolutionaries. The Montreal Marxist Winter School aims to arm us with the tools we need to understand and transform the world.
The decline of U.S. imperialism, though relative, is wreaking havoc across the Americas. The U.S. turned Venezuela into a semi-colony, seizing control of its oil reserves, revenue, and infrastructure. Trump has threatened that Cuba is next, tightening the blockade and making scandalous comments about taking over the island.
The U.S. is also turning on its closest “allies”. Trump refused to renew CUSMA and is now waging a trade war with Canada. As the declining empire tries to hold on to hegemony over the Western hemisphere, the consequences are devastating for the whole continent.
With the contradictions of the system exposed, mass consciousness stands to transform rapidly. We saw glimpses of this in the 2019 uprisings that shook various countries of Latin America. More recently, anti-ICE movements in the belly of the beast twice forced Trump to back down. The potential for revolution against capitalism and imperialism is more real than ever.
That’s why the theme of the 17th edition of the Montreal Marxist Winter School is Revolution in the Americas, with talks on the revolutionary history of the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Cuba. We will also explore the revolutionary history of Canada and Quebec with sessions on the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike and the 1837-38 Patriots’ Rebellion.
Over the years the Marxist Winter School has become the biggest event of its kind in the Americas. Last year we had over 750 participants and 11 talks. This year we are adding two sessions for a total of 13 presentations on Marxist theory and history. For the first time in the history of the school we will have a session in Spanish, on the Mexican Revolution by a leading member of the Partido Comunista Revolucionario – Mexico, the Mexican section of the Revolutionary Communist International.
To make it a real international event, we will also have guests from all over the continent, including the U.S.A., Mexico, Brazil and more!
