The start of the school year at the University of Montreal showed that young people want to see a socialist Quebec in their lifetime! On the very first day, we sold our entire stock of 80 newspapers, and 59 people wanted to get involved with the party!
As we prepared for the start of the school year, we had one figure in mind: if 26% of young people have a favorable view of communism, then there’s at least 18,000 students on campus we need to talk to. And our experience confirmed these figures.
From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., we manned the table nonstop, and the atmosphere was incredible. Our comrades approached students with the question, “Are you sick of capitalism?” For many, the answer was obvious, and the September issue of the newspaper was the perfect tool to explain how we can overthrow this system and build socialism right here in Quebec.
Hundreds of students came to see us, actively seeking answers to their questions; one even approached us saying, “Bless me,” when she saw our table.
We also spoke with workers from the university and the surrounding neighborhood, including an older Iranian woman who was delighted to see young students fighting for communist ideas. She told us, “Communism and Marxism are the truest, most humane ideas there are.” She bought a newspaper for herself and her husband!
It’s only the first day of the new school year, but one thing is clear: the tide is turning for communist ideas, and nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.
