On the third day of Halifax’s 4-day tabling series, our ideas were deeply resonating with the many of the students walking by. After passing by, a group of 5 young women came back to us to have a discussion. Starting from who Marx was, we went to how the history of the October Revolution is viciously attacked in the education, how its lessons apply to the revolutionary situation in Kashmir, and why we need Marxist ideas more than ever.
The other soon went from being quiet to urgently chiming in. One asked “won’t a worker’s government keep the revolution from going further? Every government oppresses the people.” We explained that the state defends the interest of one class over another. The only way to keep a workers government healthy is to keep it in the masses’ democratic control and spread the revolution to the whole world. At the end of the conversation, the first girl said, “I feel like I’ve learned more in this conversation than I have in the last 5 years,” and eagerly bought a paper. She is only one of many of the millions eagerly seeking revolutionary answers to capitalism’s ills.
