Wildfires and droughts are raging across the country, putting hundreds of lives and homes of workers at risk. Out here in the Atlantic provinces we’ve usually viewed those as a plight in the West, but it’s spread out here as well in the past couple years. In particular, the entire province of Nova Scotia has been in a drought since July 31st and we haven’t seen any significant rain since early June. In my 22 years of life I have never seen the ground so dry before, the grass so dead, and so many bodies of water nearly drained to the bottom. To decrease the amount of wildfires the government has even gone as far as banning everyone from entering the woods or you risk a 25k fine. However, several permits for forestry operations to continue have been approved and the government is making many efforts to open up the province to uranium mining and extraction of offshore natural gas. Our use of coal as our main energy source has hardly even budged an inch. So much for a green transition! This is no different from the rest of the capitalists across Canada racing to pillage the land’s vast resources ever since the trade war began. Many of these resources are also critical minerals that are integral to building high tech military weaponry. This will serve to be very beneficial for the arms race that’s occurring across the western imperialist countries. It’s never been clearer how willing the bourgeoisie are to put the environment and the working class on the sacrificial altar of profit. The rich are killing the planet and it’s high time we return the favour.
The wrath of nature and the working class await the rich
It’s never been clearer how willing the bourgeoisie are to put the environment and the working class on the sacrificial altar of profit.
