I was at the Teamsters picket line outside of the CPKC headquarters in Calgary and had a chance to chat with a few people. One of them was a non-union independent contractor that used to do repairs on the tracks. He opened up about how he had been dealing with severe PTSD after very nearly getting hit by a train, preventing him from being able to work. He lamented that after filing for WCB, it felt like “my life was reduced to a mere dollar figure.” The Communist Manifesto says that capitalism leaves “…no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous cash payment.” which I think speaks to his experience profoundly. Workers who injure themselves on the job are treated as a burden to be paid off rather than victims who need help and compassion. Not to mention how alienating it must feel to have to jump through all sorts of bureaucratic hoops just to get compensation. If the bosses are willing to shut down a massive billion-dollar-a-day industry nationwide just to cut costs at the expense of workers’ safety, then this system is clearly broken. What left is there to do but fight back?
