No matter what industry you work in, a victory of the UAW striking workers will strengthen the working class as a whole and will help all types of workers organize their own unions.
Nearly 50,000 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union have gone out on strike at GM factories, warehouses, and engineering offices in the US. The strike began at midnight on Sunday, September 15, 2019. The Teamsters union, which represents car haulers, said it would honor the UAW picket lines and would not deliver new cars to dealers until the strike has ended. This is the first strike at GM in 12 years. It is part of a growing wave of strikes and job actions which started with the West Virginia teachers’ strike in 2018.
Three separate instances of Justin Trudeau wearing blackface have surfaced this week. Usually this type of scandal is reserved for Republican governors of the Southern United States, but this goes to show that Canada is not exempt from racism as some believe. These racist photos have also come to light during an election where racism […]
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has declared war on the working class with the implementation of Bill 9. This bill allows Kenney’s government to break contracts for public sector workers as well as defer bargaining with their unions. Unsurprisingly, this comes just days after the release of the MacKinnon report, a United Conservative Party (UCP) appointed […]
On Sept. 15, 93 per cent of the 55,000 education workers with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) voted to authorize a strike. These workers could potentially be in a strike position on Sept. 30. This marks the first significant step towards possible strike action in the fight against Ontario Premier Doug Ford, more […]
As students return to classes this fall, it has become clear that they are being crushed under the weight of the new cuts to post-secondary education and OSAP. In particular, these cuts have hurt working-class students the most, with some students reporting up to $10,000 lost in OSAP funding. The resulting inability to pay tuition […]
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 recently joined the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2 in calling for free public transit and a campaign of mass strikes and protests to bring down Ontario Premier Doug Ford. As CUPE 2 is a relatively small local of 650 electrical workers within the Toronto Transit […]
At the end of July, a survey conducted by Forum Research revealed that 58 per cent of Canadians support socialism. This echoes similar polls in the U.S. However, with the start of the federal election campaign it seems like this desire for socialism is not being reflected by any of the major parties. As long […]
The international climate strike movement has created waves across the world. Over the past year, during the course of several global days of action, millions of young people from over 100 countries have walked out of school in order to join the ‘Fridays for Future’ protests, demanding immediate action against the climate crisis. By taking […]
Workers at Nemak Windsor Aluminum plant, a GM supplier, have occupied the plant in response to the announcement that the plant is shutting down in 2020. More than 250 jobs are at stake if the plant is shuttered. This is particularly egregious union-busting from management, considering that a guarantee of production through 2022 was negotiated […]
We live in dark times. Mental health issues and depression in particular are growing rapidly, especially among young people. If you were to believe certain clever journalists, smartphones and social media are to blame. It seems like some people have their heads buried in the sand and cannot see what is going on around us. […]
