A recent poll by the Toronto Star found that nearly 60 per cent of Canadian workers agreed with the statement “I’d be happier if I didn’t have to work at all”.
In fact, over the past few years, we’ve seen a growing movement against work—or at least against the current conditions of work under capitalism.
An offensive is underway on Montreal campuses to slander, provoke, and smear activists who oppose Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
We wish to denounce these attempts by university administrations, capitalist politicians, and the media to attack the Palestinian solidarity movement in this way. We invite student associations, student unions, and anyone defending the cause of the oppressed to do the same.
Last Wednesday Oct. 25, on the initiative of the Palestinian Youth movement, thousands of students walked out across Canada to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, and denounce our ruling class and universities’ complicity with the ongoing ethnic cleansing in Palestine. The communists of Fightback participated in and helped organize many of these walkouts from Vancouver to Montreal.
As the Israeli state esclate their genocidal campaign in Gaza, the York University administration have also ramped up their campaign of silencing the student movement for denouncing this genocide.
A recent poll commissioned by the Fraser Institute, a right-wing “think tank,” found that 54 per cent of people aged 18-34 think that socialism would “improve the economy and well-being of Canadians.” The authors of the study were shocked and appalled at this finding. But it doesn’t end there. According to their poll, a whopping one million young Canadians say socialism isn’t enough, they say that communism is the ideal economic system.
Capitalism has utterly failed the youth. With rising inflation, skyrocketing tuition, and no prospect of a future, young people are guaranteed a worse quality of life than their parents.
